Why Drink Water During Your Workout?

Exercise is important for ones health. But when you exercise a lot or in hot weather, you lose a lot of fluids by sweating. This, in turn, reduces blood volume and makes you tired. Fortunately, there’s a simple solution to this problem. Drinking water during your workout can help lessen this fatigue.
People who exercise vigorously can increase their endurance by taking in fluids. This also applies to athletes who need extra fluids just before a competition and during events that last over an hour. While the body can protect itself from dehydration or lack of water, remember that thirst occurs only when someone is dehydrated. For this reason, thirst is not a reliable indicator that you need water. Even before you become thirsty, you need to replenish the water your body loses.
This was proven in a study presented at the Experimental Biology meeting in San Diego. It showed that drinking water helps athletes exercise longer. The subjects were 10 college students who drank four, eight or 12 eight-ounce glasses of water every day for 12 weeks. Those who took four glasses of water daily had a five percent lower blood volume than those who drank eight glasses. Their blood volume was also 10 percent lower than those who drank 12 glasses of water each day.
The American College of Sports Medicine said that the elderly should drink enough water too since the aging body cant properly regulate body temperature. This makes senior citizens easy targets for heat-related problems. To stay hydrated before, during and after exercise, drink water as often as possible. A good rule to follow is to drink one cup every 15 to 20 minutes. Carry a water bottle with you if possible or go to the water cooler during breaks. This will ensure that you get enough water.
